The
Royal Grammar
School

The school was looking to update their 'ethos of learning' initiative to something more focused on the character of their students they wished to develop. They asked me to take the text and stock images they had used to develop the 'Character Development' framework of Respect, Integrity, and Aspiration and to design icons representing each that fit with the school's existing brand identity.
I decided to use Hexagonal icons, as they appeared more anchored as part of the design. A hexagonal design would also allow for easier integration of future logos if any were to be designed, as indeed they shortly were.
Beyond use of the school's existing colour scheme, I realised I could use the 'trefoil' motif present in the crown of the existing logo to tie together the new designs with the established identity. They also provided a more natural shape language in the design than the sharp shapes arrows would have, and more abstract than the literal iconography that hands would have bogged the design down with.
In addition to the design of these icons, the school also asked for a number of short animations displaying them that could be used across their website and in footers of emails.
When considering transitions to each sub-animation, I realised I could further use the Trefoil ident present in the crown logo to move to other visuals, taking the animation on a journey to the different aspects of the framework; all unique but remaining connected.
